Long ago, people built a network of BBSes on top of an already existing network, the telephone network. This was not what the telephone service was for, but people made it happen anyway.

Nowadays, we have this network we call "the net". And on top of it, are networks. But unlike BBSes, who were established thru technology, these modern soft networks are based on community, identity, algorithms, and the sheer drive to keep existing. Anorexics. The Dark Web. File-sharing. LGBT. Free-speech. And many more.
