someone once asked me:
can i ask you about being vegan? do you just not like the taste of meat or is it more of... how do i put this... uh.. anti animal cruelty? or other stuff?
this is my answer:
i actually really like the taste of meat, if its prepared well. grilled meat, sauteed shrimp.... i think vegan protein can be comparable but ppl have to be smarter about it. anyway, i eat vegan as a testament. i dont fool myself; to believe that animals are not commodities does not require any lifestyle. and refusing to eat the product of an animal, alive or dead, does not reduce cruelty, and it does not undo any suffering. its magical thinking. if anything, i find eating meat deeply spiritual. someone killed an animal. i couldnt have stopped it. but i can eat the flesh that remains, and incorporate their life into my own.... i think people are naturally inclined to be vegan. but humanity is currently dependent on animal husbandry. people dont want to think about animal suffering, theres too much suffering to deal with already....and others.... dont see a path forward. there isnt a simple one. possible vegan eating is too new. some people say eating vegan is easy, but i know the truth is more complicated. even just from a nutritional perspective. in short, i think some day human society will be vegan. but the only way we can get there is to prove its possible. for that, we need human test subjects. i volunteer. ive volunteered many times.... and failed to sustain the diet. but i have a nutritionist now, and bleeding edge research. so far so good!
